Easy sewing: Canvas tote bag for beginners.

Canvas is one of the easiest materials to handle, making it a good choice for those just starting out in the world of tailoring.

Similarly, a tote bag is one of the easiest and quickest bags to make. So why not put together an easy to make sewing project with one of the easiest fabrics to handle?

The materials you're going to need to make this canvas tote bag are:

1/2 meter of canvas.
Thread.
Scissors.
Pins.
Ruler and tape measure.
Your sewing machine.
Optional: Fileteadora.

1. The first thing is to cut the pieces you will need, the measures depend on the size you want: I did it 95cm X 45cm, and 10cm for the handles (so that they were 4cm).

2. Let's start with the bottom: the first thing to do is to fold the piece in half. Then, you are going to fold the edge 1cm, on both sides of the flap and you are going to pin the folds. Finally, you're going to sew all around the edge of the flap with a 1/4″ seam allowance.

3. Now, fold the other piece in half and pin on both sides to sew both edges with a 1cm seam allowance. You can use a filet or zig zag stitch to improve the quality of the tote bag.

4. In the bottom corner you are going to mark a square of 5cm X 5cm with a pencil. You should do this on both sides and on both sides of the bag. Then, you are going to fold the bottom and pin to sew along the line you marked. This will create volume at the bottom of the bag. Then, cut the excess fabric leaving a 1cm seam allowance. To finish, fillet the edge or stitch a zig zag stitch.

5. Now, you are going to move on to the top opening. Make a mark 5cm from the top edge on both sides and in the center.

6. Next, you are going to fold 1cm from the edge and then 4cm to make a hem (right along the mark you made in the previous step).

7. Now, pin and sew all around the edge. You can pass 1 or 2 seams.

Finally, the only thing left to do is to attach the handles to the bag.

8. Mark the middle of the bag with a pin. Then mark 6cm on each side of the pin with a pencil. Do this on both sides of the bag. Next, place the shoulder strap over the marks you made and pin in place. To join the flap, you are going to sew in a square shape and then in an X shape. This way, the flaps will be securely attached.
